our ceremony readings

After tons and tons of online research, we finally solidified our ceremony reading choices a few weeks before the wedding.

Following a great deal of debate (because we had tons of favorites that we would have loved to include) here are the winners:

Excerpt from C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity entitled "Being In Love" which will be read by Mr. FP's' mom:

If the old fairy-tale ending "and they lived happily ever after…." is taken to mean "They felt for the next fifty years exactly as they felt the day before they were married," then it says what probably never was nor ever would be true, and would be highly undesirable if it were. Who could bear to live in that excitement for even five years? What would become of your work, your appetite, your sleep, and your friendships? But, of course, ceasing to be "in love" need not mean ceasing to love.

Love in this second sense-love as distinct from "being in love" and it is not merely a feeling. Love is a deep unity, maintained by the will and deliberately strengthened by habit; reinforced by the grace which both partners receive from God. They can have this love for each other even at those moments when they do not like each other; as you love yourself even when you do not like yourself. They can retain this love even when each could easily allow themselves to be "in love" with someone else. "Being in love" first moved them to promise fidelity but this quieter love enables them to keep the promise. It is on this love that the engine of marriage is run: being in love was the explosion that started it.

This will be followed by an excerpt from Sandol Stoddard Warburg's children's book "I Like You" which will be read by my sister/maid of honour:

I like you
And I know why
I like you because
You are a good person
To like

When I think something is important
You think it's important too

When I say something funny
You laugh I think I'm funny and
You think I'm funny too
Hah-hah

You know how to be silly
That's why I like you
Boy are you ever silly
I never met anybody sillier than me
till I met you
I like you because
You know when it’s time to stop being silly

Maybe day after tomorrow
Maybe never

Oops too late
It’s quarter past silly
If I am a goofus on the roofus
Hollering my head off
You are one too

That's because
You really like me
You really like me
Don't you?
And I really like you back

And you like me back
And I like you back
And that's the way we keep on going
Every day
If you find two four-leaf clovers
You give me one
If I find four I give you two
If we only find three
We keep on looking
Sometimes we have good luck
And sometimes we don't

I like you because I don't know why but
Everything that happens
Is nicer with you
I can't remember when I didn't like you
It must have been lonesome then
I like you because…. Because….. because….
I forget why I like you
But I do
So many reasons
Even if it was way down at the bottom of January
Even if it was no place particular in January
I would go on choosing you
And you would
go on choosing me
Over and over again

That's how it would happen every time
I don't know why
I guess I don't know why I like you really
I guess I just like you…..
I guess I just like you…..

Because I like you

I love these readings more than all the others, but I still must confess that I'm sad that we couldn't include all the readings we loved. Although, let's face it, if we had included them, our ceremony would have run around 2 hours long. I guess it's better this way. *Sigh*.

I love the 'i like you' reading. What a wondeful thing to read!

I think we're going to read "I Like You" as well! I know it's gotten popular amongst wedding bloggers but it's still unique and makes much sense for us, since I work in children's book publishing. My fiance is going to select our other reading, which will likely be a bit more serious.

I LOVE that passage from C.S. Lewis. I've read it before, but misplaced it before our wedding or else I definitely would've incorporated it. It's so true! We used 'Union' and I wish we could've used a couple more, but it would've been way too long, like you. Oh well.

The poem is beautiful! You made great selections. It makes me wish we weren't having our traditional Catholic ceremony. But, alas, we must stick to the biblical readings (sigh).

Those are good ones :)

Since you can't have EVERY reading, could you incorporate some into the decor? Framing some out in fancy fonts/papers with romantic type graphics could fancy up a guest book table.
